Research programmes (e.g. MPhil, PhD) focus mainly on research work. These programmes require applicants to have sound research background. Students need to submit a thesis and pass the oral defence conducted by the Thesis Assessment Committee to graduate. Taught programmes (e.g. MA, MBA, MSc, MSSc) focus on coursework. These programmes usually do not require students to submit a thesis.
Our research programmes offer“MPhil – PhD Programmes" with an“MPhil Stream”and a“PhD Stream". You can apply for the PhD stream under the“MPhil-PhD Programmes”offered in our University if you have a Bachelor's degree with Honours not lower than Second Class. Please refer to our Admission Requirements for the general qualifications for admission.
You may submit the score report of one of the following tests. The scores listed below are for reference only. Some programmes may have a higher requirement on the score requirement. Please refer to the relevant Graduate Panel for details.
○ TOEFL (not lower than 550 paper-based, 213 computer-based, and 79 internet-based); or
○ GMAT (Verbal not lower than 21); or
○ IELTS (Academic) (not lower than Band 6.5);
Or possess a pass grade in English in one of the following examinations:
○ Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (AS Level); or
○ Hong Kong Higher Level Examination; or
○ CUHK Matriculation Examination;
Or achieve Level 4 or above in the English Language subject of the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) Examination;
Or obtained a degree from a university in Hong Kong or taken a degree programme of which the medium of instruction was English.
Students who are admitted to our full-time research postgraduate programmes are eligible to receive Postgraduate Scholarships. For students from taught postgraduate programmes,the University will provide different kinds of scholarships such as freshman scholarship,etc.For more details,please contact with corresponding programme.The Graduate Panel of your programme will consider you for the award of the Scholarships together with your application for admission. You are not required to submit a separate application.
Application materials will be posted at the homepage of each Programme during the application period. The webpage will be updated around September/October every year.
Research programmes accept applications all year around. Individual programmes may have different application deadlines. Please contact each programme for details. Applicants who apply for admission should upload the following supporting documents’ softcopies at “Online System for Applicants of Postgraduate Programmes”. Please always quote the Application No. in your future correspondences. Documents required include:
(i) Scanned copy of certificates of academic/professional qualifications (e.g., university certificate of graduation, examination certificates and other qualifications).
○ Applicants who obtained degrees from Mainland China should provide both degree certificate (学位证书) and graduation certificate (毕业证书);
○ Online Verification Report of Higher Education Qualification Certificate and Online Verification Report of Higher Education Degree Certificate, or Certificate of Authentication for Foreign Academic Degrees and Qualifications issued by the Ministry of Education Service Center for Scholarly Exchange (CDGDC)(If necessary)
(ii) Scanned copy of original official transcripts (with a complete record of courses attended and examination results) and grading scheme of all tertiary level studies.
(iii) Confidential recommendations (for all applicants) from two referees. The recommendations should be sent directly from the referees to the relevant Graduate Panel/ Programme.
a. Input two referees’ information through the “Online System for Applicants of Postgraduate Programmes” or,
b. Recommendations are requested from each referee and should be sent to related Graduate Panel no later than three weeks upon the submission of application.
(Please note that an automatic email will be sent to the referee when you complete the information online. The referee can respond directly to this email for the Recommendation.)
(iv) Any one of the following score reports/certificates, showing that you have fulfilled the English Language Proficiency Requirement for admission to the Graduate Panel (upload the scanned copy):
a. TOEFL (the University’s institution code is B429), or IELTS (Academic), or GMAT (the University’s institution code is N8N); or
b. Certified true copy* of report of the English Language subject of Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (AS Level), or Hong Kong Higher Level Examination, or Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination, or CUHK Matriculation Examination; or
c. Obtained a degree from a university in Hong Kong or taken a degree programme of which the medium of instruction was English.
